Spring Awakening: A little something-something for everyone?

Now at the Kentucky Center for the Performing ArtsTuesday was media night for the Broadway Across America opening performance of Spring Awakening, a Tony Award Winning musical based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial play set in 1891 Germany about young people discovering their sexual and personal identities. Suppression and submission are the main themes–girl/boy has feelings for girl/boy…no one knows quite what to do with those feelings. Misguided mishaps follow.

The production was one of the best I’ve see, with an amazing cast, impressive staging, and provocative subject matter

Are things in 2009 much different than they were in the turn of the last century? Sure, we know a lot about sex appeal–it drips from every available media orifice. Does being hyper-sexualized equal sexual education? Would talking about sex in our homes, churches, and schools mean less teen-pregnancies, less sexual confusion, and a more stable self esteem?

Talk to me about your thoughts.
