Double Standard: noun– any code or set of principles containing different provisions for one group of people than for another, esp. an unwritten code of sexual behavior permitting men more freedom than women.
I was chatting with a friend this morning about how men are granted permission to age, yet women are often denied the same privilege. This double standard also applies to the looks department. Just listen to the snarky comments made when a couple walks into a party, and she is not as lovely as he. Turn the tables, and the homely he is called “interesting.” Not so much for the plain-Jane she on his arm.
What’s up with this? It’s 2009 for god’s sake. Why haven’t we as a society evolved beyond the gross double standard?
Consider the public’s reaction to Susan Boyle—“How can that ugly woman sing so purty?” Suppose she was an ugly man (do not go there)?
And don’t get me started on the whole “cougar” thing. When a middle-age woman dates a much younger man, she’s called a predatory animal. Switch it up and the younger woman is labeled a “gold digger or trophy wife.” Women always get the shaft (so to speak).
