By now everyone knows about the Rev. Ken Pagano’s invitation to bring their weapons to church day this past Saturday. Was this a fitting way to celebrate our second amendment right or a misguided marketing ploy? Everyone has an opinion, but only Pagano, (pastor of New Bethel Church here in Louisville, Ky.) knows the true answer.
I am not necessarily against responsible gun ownership, but I do take issue with the church member I witnessed on TV (WLKY, I think) asking the question, “What kind of gun would Jesus own?”
Say what?
Now I am no Bible scholar, but I do remember Jesus asking Peter to put away his sword when the disciple defended him against the Roman guards. I’m thinking that Jesus would not own a gun.
This isn’t the first time a pastor has asked for guns. Remember the west end pastor who recently held a gun buy-back day? I’m not sure if his attempt to pull guns out of the hands of thugs worked, but I find the two initiatives an interesting community incongruity.
I invite you to weigh in.

I got up early today, (give me a gold star) thought I’d walk up to my local coffee house for something tasty. I waffled on whether or not I ought to buy that $4 cappuccino (I am unemployed, on a budget and I have coffee in the house). Before I head out for my pricey perk, I give the Internet a quick peek. There it was on the MSN front page, a story about four dollar coffee and other expensive goodies–Twenty Fads we’ll Regretby Liz Puliman Weston.
Eye-opening and somewhat funny, Liz offers us an amusing reality check on fading American overabundance.
Check it out here, and post your feedback.

Welcome to Monday. I’m back and rested–hope you are too. Spanking is on my mind. No, not the naughty kind; the kind of spanking delivered to little misbehaving behinds.
Kate Gosselin of Jon & Kate Plus 8 gave daughter Leah a swat for disobedience and now Kate is the center of the debate over whether or not physical discipline is harmful to a child’s mental development.
I was spanked. My biological dad was the “go cut your own switch” guy… lots of pre-swat angst, but very little pain involved. My step dad was a “spare the rod and spoil the child” guy. I’m more the “take beloved items away and go sit in time out” type of disciplinarian.
Kids can be beyond unnerving. Depending on which mental health care professional you agree with, a swat on the rump can either harm or help.

Cougar (definition compiled from Urban Dictionary) A slang term used to describe an attractive older woman, usually between thirty and fifty years-old, who prefers dating much younger men—sometimes called huntresses seeking prey.
I am not a big fan of labels. They’re a “fast-food” method of identifying particular groups of people—Americans love all things fast and easy; it gives us more time to tweet and do other important stuff. Recently, one of my best friends called me a cougar. It was a compliment…or not.
I have certainly paid enough dues to belong to this “hot” new group: I have the wisdom of a woman who’s lived a bit; I exercise my mind and body regularly; and I have lots of younger friends (I do not date younger men, since I’m married a man who is not my junior).
Complement or not, being called “a cougar” sounds rather vulgar. I mean, is comparison to a predatory feline a good thing?
The Cougar…compliment or slam?

Earlier this week I read a Newsweek article (May 4, 2009) on the re-packaging of hate groups in America. The article’s content, coupled with the recent shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, stirred up my personal-pot of disgust.
In the Newsweek piece, loving the white race was the thinly veiled reason for belonging to a white supremacist organization. “It’s not about hate, it’s about love…Why is it that a black man wants to preserve his culture and heritage it’s a good thing, and when a white person wants the same thing, we’re called haters?” said Thomas Rob, national director of the Knights Party, during the Klan offshoot’s May family picnic in Zinc, Ark. Yet what’s behind this “white love” ideal seems to be fear– fear of losing rights and jobs to the Hispanics, blacks, and Jews in this country.
With the Ku Klux Klan’s retooled message of a kinder, gentler, Klan, an increased number of Americans are hopping aboard the white supremacy bus. Are white folks in the U.S.A. truly losing their rights or is this all fear-fueled rhetoric?
The constitution protects our first amendment right to freedom of speech. For this I am thankful. Does this fundamental right to voice one’s opinion distill down to a license to kill?
Your thoughts?
